SCWL Postseason Cast Assessment Entry #18

Entry #18: Again, I’ll reveal who went home at the end of this post.

I must apologize in advance for not having the entire Rite of Passage saved nor this round’s Tribal Council chat from MSN. I copied/pasted the transcript of this whole night onto the group’s Facebook page, but the transcript cuts off two-thirds of the way through Rite of Passage.

Luckily I know exactly how the challenge went and that the Tribal Council chat took no more than two minutes.

State of the situation: Brett has activated his idol two rounds in a row. Him and Adam have miraculously regained majority after an 8-2 deficit because the female alliance self-destructed worse than a Voltorb and an Electrode.

Logan says:

Sadly, the transcript cuts of there. I can assure you the remaining entries weren’t as entertaining.

So from there I made the announcement. Now this I remember the clearest of pretty much anything that happened all game.

Logan says:
OKAY
ON DAY 36 YOU PLAYED A CHALLENGE THAT REQUIRED YOU TO OUTWIT ALL THE OTHERS
ON DAY 37/TODAY YOU PLAYED A CHALLENGE THAT REQUIRED YOU TO OUTPLAY ALL THE OTHERS

Adam says:
oh god not outlast lol

Logan says:
AND TONIGHT YOU WILL DO THE FINAL COMPONENT: OUTLAST. ADAM IS RIGHT.
BECAUSE ONLY TWO OF YOU WILL FACE THE JURY. WIN THE CHALLENGE AND YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY VOTE OUT THE 18TH PERSON FROM THE GAME AS WELL AS THE NINTH AND FINAL MEMBER OF OUR JURY.

Immunity Challenge XVI: Oath of Silence With Roman Numerals

The immunity challenge for SCWL 1 – 5 has always been the same. I say “roll call” and you say “here” within ten seconds. Throughout the challenge the response time dwindles from ten seconds slowly down to three seconds over a stretch of several hours. You are not allowed to say anything else the whole challenge.

In the Prequel, it was slightly different. You had to respond with a roman numeral.

First Roll Call: I
Second Roll Call: II
Third Roll Call: III
Fourth Roll Call: IV
Fifth Roll Call: V
.
.
.
.
Twenty-third roll call: XXIII

Very straight-forward. Whenever I explain the variation used for SCWL 1 -5 it takes about four to six minutes. For the Prequel, the only difference is “(roman numeral)” instead of “here” as the response. So it should take the same amount of time.

But I found myself explaining it for about fifteen minutes. I decidedto wear people down by not doing the first roll call until the ten minute mark to see if I could get anybody annoyed and impatient. I pretty much know the whole transcript by heart even though I haven’t seen it in four years.

Logan says:
OKAY. WE’LL DO A PRACTICE ROLL CALL.
PRACTICE ROLL CALL.

Adam says:
I

Brett says:
I

Gayle says:
I

Logan says:
Okay, everyone understands the challenge then.
Remember that was a practice. You will type ‘I’ for the first roll call.
Okay. I will count you down then the challenge will begin.

**TEN MINUTES LATER**

Logan says:
Brett and Gayle answered incorrectly. Adam wins immunity for the seventh and final time in a row! He will simultaneously decide who gets voted out but also who advances to the Final Two with him.

***

So what the heck happened there? I facepalmed the second this happened. It’s another reason why I waited ten minutes because I knew something goofy and ridiculous would happen. I mean this is how 95% of the season has gone. Of course I knew it was going to happen here.

This is the only time in series history where Oath of Silence ended on the first Roll Call. In fact, players lasting ten minutes would be a record until SCWL 5 when Tyler was out after seven minutes.

However, to Tyler’s credit, he already went through five roll calls by the seven minute mark. So really, he did better than the Prequel players who had only one lousy roll call.

Brett screwed up because even though I made it abundantly clear that the Practice Roll Call was practice, and even counted them down to the start of the challenge, he entered ‘II’ anyway.

Gayle WAS going to type ‘I’, but hit backspace when she saw Brett type ‘II’. She thought maybe they had to submit in ascending order. Gayle hit backspace and replaced it with ‘III’ before hitting enter.

And despite endurance being Adam’s weakness, he essentially wins the challenge because Brett and Gayle couldn’t follow simple directions after already understanding them.

Welcome to the most ridiculous game ever.

***

Adam would get blood on his hands for the first time all season. He must choose between voting out Gayle or Brett. As I said before there isn’t a TC chat saved, but you can imagine how tired we all were so the TC went by very fast. Both pleaded their case by being loyal all along and said they would have taken Adam to Final Two.

THE TRIBE/ADAM HAS SPOKEN. IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO GO.

So despite winning as many rewards possible, Gayle goes home in third place. She made several mistakes along the way and finally paid for it. Nobody has ever been such a strong favourite to win than Gayle. In the end she would give up her enormous advantage and go home in a disappointing third place finish. If Adam had taken her to the end, I am certain that Gayle would have won the final jury vote.

I think the lesson learned from Gayle going home in third is that it doesn’t matter if you’re guaranteed to advance to day 38 by the end of day one. . .you still need to maximize the possibility of you going to the Final Two and having some sense of loyalty to your alliances.

Dianne, Natasha, Gayle, Lyndsay, Jerry, Lisa, Kai, and Alisha vs. Adam and Brett.

Final Two: Adam and Brett.

This whole game may have been upsetting to the eyes and to my mood at the time, but the biggest upset of all is that Adam and Brett were the Final Two.

And really, they didn’t have to do much. They enter the merge in minority but the core of the eight-person alliance all turned against each other. At Final Five the majority alliance reunited but found themselves running into two idols. This is perhaps the only season where idols had a direct impact on who would be in the Final Two.

If it weren’t for idols, Brett is gone in fifth. Who knows what happens from there. Part of me wished the season didn’t have idols because then we would have had a finale with classic Survivor gameplay.

Instead the only two rounds that resembled Survivor were Lisa’s boot and Gayle’s boot. Two rounds out of the whole freakin’ dang game.

The Prequel will go down as our first and only underdog victory of the series to this point (who knows what SCWL 6 holds).

I had no idea who would win between Adam and Brett. The only time they were responsible for who went home was when Adam voted out Gayle. The jury is full of Inukshuk members or a member who defected to Inukshuk at merge.

JURY: SIMONE-KAI-ALISHA-LYNDSAY-LISA-JERRY-NATASHA-DIANNE-GAYLE

The majority of the jury was inactive. And those in the minority? They were never in Adam and Brett’s alliance.

This is the only time in series history where I thought it could go 9-0 for Adam or all the way to 9-0 for Brett. When players never show up and interact with each other all season, there is no insight into the dynamics or who would even vote for who at the end. There was no obvious vote for Adam nor one obvious vote for Brett.

This meant all nine juror votes were up in the air heading into Final Tribal Council. Adam and Brett will have a never ending battle as this is the first and last opportunity to receive jury votes, right?
.
.
.
.
.
.
Wrong. You will soon see the quietest and lamest Final Tribal Council in SCWL history. It’s like neither of them wanted to win, nor was the jury interested in pressing them for answers.

The biggest mystery is how many jurors would show up to ask a question or even cast a vote. Some players who were voted out after being extremely inactive had been out of the game for one to two months. Contact seemed impossibly by this point. However, I was absolutely determined to ensure that Adam and Brett would have a fair shot to win. I would chase jurors down until either Adam or Brett had received five out of the nine votes to win.

And because I refused to give in and stopped at nothing. . .Final Tribal Council would be the longest round of the game as I repeatedly messaged jurors for their vote. Surprisingly, the easiest part would be getting them to answer a question.

After a 3 1/2 month marathon, we would begin the final round of the game. Adam and Brett aren’t going to fight hard in FTC, but one of them will somehow win this game against all logic.

Entry #18: Gayle – OYC -> Inukshuk – (2-1 vote) – October 11 2009 – SCWL: The Prequel
– Only person in series history to have two hidden immunity idols in their possession
– Last person standing from OYC tribe
– Last person standing of anyone who was on Inukshuk at any point during the game
– The only person ever to use a Double Tribal Council Trigger
– Only person to waste two idols in series history
– Only person to beat Adam in a post-merge challenge in SCWL: Prequel
– Only person to make it to Final Four of SCWL Prequel without a single past vote against her

Next Time on SCWL: The Prequel:
– The Final Tribal Council is shown for the first time in four years! How lousy and lame will this FTC be?
– A relatively inactive and disengaged jury will show up to FTC at some point. The questions come quickly, but hunting down votes to determine a winner will take months.
– Over two months after Gayle has been voted out, FTC comes to an end as the winner and runner-up are revealed.
– I discuss the runner-up’s journey in this season to set it all up for the winner’s story and summary of the season in the final entry of one of the worst games played to completion in ORG history!
– You do not want to miss the last two episodes of the biggest snoozer, chaotic, and worst game played in SCWL history.
