SCWL Postseason Cast Assessment Entry #16

Entry #16: I will once again reveal it at the end of the post.

When did the second part to this round’s immunity challenge take place? October 11th.
When did the first Tribal Council of this round take place? October 11th.
When did the second Tribal Council of this round take place? October 11th.
When did the Rite of Passage take place? October 11th.
When did the Final Immunity Challenge take place? October 11th.
When did the Final Three Tribal Council take place? October 11th.
When were the Final Two allowed to post their opening statement? October 11th.

The previous round ended on September 22nd.

So what happened between September 22nd and the conclusion of the challenge on October 11th?

Well, part one of the immunity challenge required three separate sessions to be played.

And why did practically the whole finale finish on October 11th? It was Thanksgiving weekend. The 11th was a holiday where everyone had the time to play this all out. More on that later.

Jerry has been voted out. Every inactive has been eliminated. Only one self-vote between all five remaining players. We have gone through FIFTEEN rounds where only one person was actively participating and aiming to win.

No matter what there isn’t much to complain about the finale. . .
.
.
.
.
.
Unless you count the four idols that must be played on day 37 and the Double Tribal Council Trigger!

Everyone assumed it would be a Final Three at the end because I told them only two immunity challenges remained. Gayle had yet to tell everyone about the big mistake she had made. Heck, three of the four idols were still a mystery. Brett and Gayle still failed to remember about each other’s idols, and everyone thought the Exile idol left in Lisa’s pocket.

Then I dropped the news about Gayle’s advantage since the merge. I can’t remember the exact reaction other than “geez, the stakes are huge”.

And big stakes calls for an insanely big challenge that I remember very vividly.

Immunity Challenge XV: Football Maze and Sudoku Square
This challenge was played in two parts. I’ll cover part one for now.

I made my dad do this challenge to ensure it wouldn’t take too long. He took about forty minutes on paper.

Here’s the maze:

Prequel maze

You start in the centre of a 3×3 maze. There is one wall. One square contains a key. Another contains a puzzle piece. Find the key and puzzle piece to unlock the front door. The front door is located in the top middle square.

You will then enter the bottom centre square of a 5×5 maze. Another key, another puzzle piece, and several more walls inside this maze. Repeat the process.

You will then enter a 9×9 maze. Repeat the process.

You will then enter a 13×13 maze. Repeat the process.

Once exited the 13×13 maze, you must walk up steps to find an empty puzzle station in a 3×3 grid. Doing so ends part one.

Each move you finish ahead of the others grants you a one minute advantage in part two of the challenge.

Example

If you finish the maze in fifty moves, and 2nd place needed 60 moves, you would start part two ten minutes earlier than 2nd place.

Here is a visual below of how the maze looked:

Upon their turn each person could move up to eight spaces. If they hit a wall their turn was over.

Now imagine doing this challenge live as all five people needed to take a turn before moving. And with this cast who aren’t used to mazes they are probably not going to have a smooth run.

In their defense, I made the maze way too big. Just looking at it intimidates you, I bet.

So why did I do this as the maze? Because the football maze in Fiji is my favourite day 37 challenge in Survivor history. I wanted to do my best job of replicating it.

The first session of this challenge took place on October 1st. I remember it being the middle of the week and knowing everyone present had to be up early the next day. I told them all that I doubted it would take longer than two hours at the most.

Boy, was I wrong.

Everyone started in the 3×3 grid. All five showed up. Four out of the five players were out of the first maze within about ten minutes. So far so good.

But I knew trouble was on the horizon as it took us roughly an hour to get through the second maze. Everybody was taking a -really- long time before moving and it was tough to impose a time limit. Oh, and after an hour somebody was still stuck in the 3×3 maze.

Just who was that person? Dianne. She would run into the same seven squares over and over and over again. Only one out of nine squares were a wall that ended your turn. Somehow she hit the wall the majority of the time. I was stunned because even if you don’t understand the challenge whatsoever, she would have entered the 5×5 maze by luck.

She only got the key but not the puzzle piece. When everyone had entered the 9×9 maze, she called me and told me she was dropping out of the challenge.

Adam, Brett, Gayle, and Natasha were all neck and neck upon entering the 9×9 maze. They all followed each other. I was expecting them to agree to boot Dianne at this point.

But another hour passed by and we were still in the 9×9 maze. Two hours turned into three. I screwed up plotting one of Natasha’s moves and we had to pause the challenge for twenty minutes so I could correct the mistake. She was given two extra turns and sure enough caught up.

Work or school was only hours away for all five of us so we had to talk for twenty minutes that we would continue the challenge at a later date.

But then a wrench came. Brett wouldn’t be online for at least another week. So we talked until about eleven o’ clock that him and whoever else could play out the rest of the maze that night. I would record how many moves it took them to reach the end, and when the others would play a few days later, I would update them how Brett moved each round.

Yeah, thank god my brain was operating well enough to come up with a fair solution for a disastrous challenge.

So Brett and Adam decided to stay while Gayle and Natasha went to bed.

Even with Brett and Adam it took them another TWO HOURS to finish out the maze. They started at roughly six and we went until midnight. Adam finished the maze only one minute ahead of Brett.

They went to bed as I printed off their moves and recorded their precise path to ensure I did not screw up.

***

One week passed. It was October 8th. Myself, Gayle, and Natasha sat down togther offline as we were in the same room to finish out their maze. It went much faster in person, but still took a long time because they did much worse than Brett and Adam.

In fact Gayle never exited the 9×9 maze. She dropped out after ninety minutes. Myself and Natasha sat through dinner and watched a bit of a movie before she was done the maze. It took her forty additional moves to finish it.

That means Adam would have a forty minute advantage on Natasha but only a one minute advantage on Brett for part two.

Yep. Eight hours of work just to have Adam and Brett be one minute apart in an immunity challenge.

Everyone was amazed by how well put together my maze was, but were in agreeance with me that EIGHT FREAKIN’ PAINFUL HOURS was far too long. They were even more impressed that I kept up with everyone’s moves properly except for the one minor error.

***

So part two took place live. . .on October 11th. Dianne and Lisa would be visiting at my house during Thanksgiving weekend as well as 19th place finisher Wendy and 12th place finisher Loren. There were a couple other people who knew about the Survivor game who were also present.

It was a huge night as everyone would be present to see this game go from five people down to two in one night.

Part of me wanted Brett to win immunity as a last minute upset, but Adam winning immunity would have been cool too just to see the streak be almost complete.

Twenty-four hours earlier I told the jury that Final Tribal Council would be posted October 12th. I tried to hype it up as much as possible because the jury hadn’t posted anything since each of them were voted out. I was really worried that the super-inactives and semi-inactives wouldn’t show up to Final Tribal Council after all.

Here is the message the five players received regarding the big day:

ME: Just so everyone is priviledged to the same information:

Adam will begin part two at 7:00pm. Brett will begin part two at 7:01pm. Natasha will begin part two at 7:42pm.

Twenty minutes after the conclusion of part two, we will have Tribal Council #16 through MSN.

Twenty minutes after that, we will have Tribal Council #17 through MSN.

Please send in a confessional before part two of the challenge takes place tomorrow. This does NOT count as the confessional that you send along with your vote at Tribal Councils.

Big night tomorrow guys. Good luck.

I knew this was the only part of the season that truly mattered and hence why I ordered them to send confessionals throughout the night. This was pretty much like the structure you see in Big Brother’s Double Eviction Nights.

It was tough to speculate who would go home for the first round because I had no idea how Natasha would vote. Her voting criteria must change starting this round. Nobody has any room left to hide. The five of them wouldn’t know who won individual immunity until about thirty minutes before Tribal Council began.

***

I should note Thanksgiving was awkward as it was the first face-to-face confrontation between Gayle, Dianne, Lisa, and Natasha since Lisa was blindsided out of the game. Lisa and Dianne kept trying to convince them how stupid it was to let Brett and Adam survive to this point. Especially when one of them will be in the Final Three. And even though everyone was told there was a second immunity challenge to play after Double Tribal Council, for some reason everybody assumed it would still be three people sitting at Final Tribal Council.

This confrontation pretty much acted as a way for Dianne, Gayle, and Natasha to re-solidify their alliance. If it weren’t for this face-to-face meeting, Adam and Brett could have cracked them. But not now. Whoever doesn’t win immunity could be blindsided out of the game.

***

Part two was a Sudoku square. Numbers one through nine. Each square contained a question. The answer would be between one and nine. Each number must be used once. Throughout the game I kept telling

***

When Adam and Brett saw the instructions for the challenge they immediately asked me to modify the rules. When all nine numbers were entered, I was supposed to only say if they were right or wrong.

However, they wanted me to tell them specifically which answers were correct and incorrect without any restriction on how often they could guess.

Clearly if this was the challenge it would be over in two minutes.

The compromise so Natasha could still have a chance: I would only tell them how many answers were correct, and they had to wait three minutes in between each guess.

Since day one I reminded them how important it was to be observant and keep track throughout the game. It was in most of my challenge e-mails and pretty much what I said at the previous TC that they really needed to be observant.

But in a group that let four idols and a Double Tribal Council Trigger last until day 37, this of course meant this challenge was in major trouble.

***

The questions for the challenge:

The day Scott LePage was voted out?
The amount of times Alisha self-voted?
The amount of challenges Adam has won since the merge?
The number of times someone has been present when being voted out?
The number of people eliminated pre-merge?
The number of immunity challenges Inukshuk won before Kyle was eliminated?
The number of people who were present to be voted out pre-merge?
The number of players who didn’t find a partner or received a penalty for not doing it properly?
The number of idols offered publicly in the game and the number of talismans given out on day one, then minus one?

As you can imagine Brett and Adam knew no answers. I remember the infamous “WHO WAS SCOTT LEPAGE?!” reaction from both Brett and Adam. I said they should know.

Both of them thought he was a contestant on the REAL Survivor and went to Survivor Wiki pages to figure out who Scott LePage was.

What’s worse is that Brett ignored the compromise reached and immediately tried to guess again, and express frustration that I wouldn’t tell him which answers were correct.

A challenge which shouldn’t take more than ten minutes ended up taking about thirty-five minutes before a winner was declared. I should note I have never done a challenge that was a pseudo-Fallen Comrades challenge ever since.

And who won immunity to advance himself into the Final Three?
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Yep. Adam did it again. Brett was another ten minutes behind before he would have finished. Adam is in the Final Three thanks to winning SIX consecutive immunity challenges with virtually no opposition.

So half of Brett, Dianne, Gayle, and Natasha will be eliminated before the next immunity challenge.

Brett is going to play his idol no matter what at Tribal Council. Will Gayle, Dianne, and Natasha anticipate this? Or is there already a plan in place to send of those three home? And will Gayle play one of her two hidden immunity idols? Read on.

NOTE: These next two Tribal Councils took place on MSN. A bunch of previous Mole contestants of my Mole games were present in addition to Loren, Wendy, and Lisa. So there was a lot of distractions going on for the contestants while this went on.

VOTING

ADAM,

(Natasha)

She’s probably the biggest competitor and if Brett does indeed have an idol she should be gone.

BRETT,

(tash)

)&^)&^I-was-second-)&^)&^

im hoping voting out tash then dianne leaves adam me and mom left

DIANNE,

I confessed on the wrong page…… so now I confess I am an idiot. My vote is for Brett

GAYLE,

I wish I could done better on the maze challenge! I should of known better not to do them late at night!!!!!! Oh well. Now I just don’t know what to do,everyone participates about the same.I will have to see what my allliance thinks.

I vote for (Brett) I hate this part of the game. I hate voting players that come to play out!

NATASHA,

i vote (brett)

confessional: i am getting very nervous about the rest of the game. if brett goes home i have no idea who i should vote for next.

Last Confessional: This was a good game. There were some very strong players. I think i am just too emotional for this kind of game.

****

Yep. Transcend finally goes down. Even though they were the first tribe to be extinct, I am stunned they made it to the Final Five. I was stunned to see Gayle had voted out Natasha instead of Dianne. Something tells me that Natasha quietly asked to be voted out in this scenario.

And you can tell everyone had much more enthusiasm for the whole game than Natasha. That’s not to say Natasha wasn’t participating at all, but her desire to win was nowhere the level of the other four players.

I am sure you caught on that noboy bothered to read the rules regarding the hidden individual immunity idols. For some reason nobody wanted to read the rules nor ask me for clarification which is why you read what was a ten minute conversation of me having to lead everyone through what was going on. Since SCWL 1 players are wise enough to ask me about the rules each season to avoid exactly what ended up happening in the SCWL Prequel.

Brett and Gayle played their idols, and even they were confused by what was going on! They were just blindly playing an idol without thinking about the strategy.

Suddenly the Final Four Tribal Council would be much more intriguing because nobody knew what was going on. Their confusion over the HII rules threw everything into a whirlwind. My assumption that Brett and Adam would idol their way into the Final Three had to be put on hold for twenty minutes as the Final Four evaluated their next move.

Natasha should not have lasted this long considering:

a) She didn’t have a computer
b) Couldn’t play most challenges
c) Only show up to THREE TC discussions all season
d) Vote fom the person who participated the least to the most without ever factoring in her own position in the game

In short, Natasha played a suicidal way of going through Survivor. She took out everybody who didn’t participate to her liking until the least participating player was left. . .herself. Sure enough she gets booted in 5th place after controlling the first fifteen rounds of the season.

I am impressed that the biggest power player from day one through thirty-six was indeed Natasha. Lisa wasn’t the huge threat acting as the head of the dragon–it was Natasha. How poetic for a season that was so awful.

I love how no one caught on that the Final Five consisted of all four captains from the beginning of the game. This round also marked the first time where people from FireWire outnumbered the people who had ever been on Inukshuk. It’s strange because Natasha was on FireWire after Transcend died but swapped to the Inukshuk side at the merge.

It shows you how the eliminations went against logic as Brett and Adam both survived an 8-2 deficit to survive to what is now a 2-2 tie in numbers.

In short, the maze was a disaster, the Sudoku square was a disaster, and the Tribal Council was a disaster. Natasha’s exit was a surprise as I assumed everyone would gang up on Dianne, but Gayle caved and voted out Natasha. Lisa gets her revenge.

But will it really matter? Adam has immunity. Brett will likely receive Adam’s Exile Carnival idol. Gayle also has the final idol in her pocket. Dianne is the only one standing without an immunity to use strategically.

And thinking that everybody except one person will have immunity activated is beyond ridiculous.

The only thing getting in the way of Dianne going home is the almighty case of past votes breaking deadlocks. What happens if Brett doesn’t have the most past votes? Will Adam’s idol be wasted while Gayle’s activates and sends Brett home by default?

That’s all it takes, people. That’s all it takes.

Entry #16: Natasha – Transcend -> FireWire – (2-1) – October 11 2009 – SCWL: The Prequel
Records: First person to be voted out in a Tribal Council where an idol was played.
– First person to be voted out in a round where an idol was activated
– The last partner standing
– First person to cast a vote at Tribal Council
– The only person to cast a vote at a TC where everyone else self-voted

NEXT TIME ON SCWL: THE PREQUEL:
– No bother hiding it–a 2-2 deadlock occurs at the Final Four Tribal Council. Whoever used their hidden immunity idol correctly will determine who goes home.
– Confusion persists as I am forced to spend another ten minutes explaining who goes home because of two idols and individual immunity being played.
– Players continue speculating if there will indeed be three people at Tribal Council.
– Don’t miss out on the weirdest Tribal Council of the season as this elimination round all plays out in the space of twenty minutes.
