Super Smash Bros. Melee Tournament 1 Playoffs

Playoffs Round of 16 (Best of 3)

————————————–

I didn’t write down the exact rules I had for the first season. I think there wasn’t any items allowed and that the higher seed had home field advantage for matches one and three. Each match was three minutes.

1) Ganondorf 278 Group 4 winner 11-1-0-0

vs.

16) Ice Climbers 118 Group 2 Wildcard 1-6-3-2

Ganondorf wins two games to one.

2) Peach 248 Group 2 winner 11-0-0-1

Vs.

15) Captain Falcon 126 Group 3 wildcard 1-4-5-2

Captain Falcon wins two games to one. So much for Peach’s dreams.

3) Luigi 229 Group 1 winner 7-3-0-1

Vs.

14) Bowser 131 Group 3 wildcard 3-2-4-3

Luigi wins two games to none. First sweep in playoff history and it’s done by Weegee.

4) Dr. Mario 210 Group 5 winner 6-3-3-0

Vs.

13) Young Link 132 Group 3 runner-up 1-7-2-2

Dr. Mario wins two games to one.

5) Samus 202 Group 3 winner 7-3-0-2

Vs.

12) Falco 138 Group 1 runner-up 2-4-5-1

Falco causes a major upset and sweeps. Although I guess an underdog can win two in a row. I mean, the 2003 (or was it 2004?) Detroit Tigers must have done the same thing.

6) Yoshi 199 Group 6 winner 3-7-1-1

Vs.

11) Mario 141 Group 4 runner-up 1-7-2-2

Mario sweeps Yoshi. Overthrowing your master can’t happen for our friendly green dinosaur.

7) Link 196 Group 6 wildcard 5-3-3-1

Vs.

10)  DK 151 Group 2 runner-up 0-10-2-0

Link wins two games to none.

8) Mr. Game & Watch 173 Group 6 wildcard 4-3-5-0

Vs.

9) Marth 163 Group 5 runner-up 3-3-6-0

Marth wins two games to one.

Quarter-Finals (Same format as before except now a best-of-5)

—————————————————————————

1) Ganondorf 278 Group 4 winner 11-1-0-0 {Ice Climbers}

Vs.

15) Captain Falcon 126 Group 3 Wildcard 1-4-5-2 {Peach}

Ganondorf sweeps with ease.

3) Luigi 229 Group 1 winner 8-3-0-1 {Bowser}

Vs.

12) Falco 138 Group 1 runner-up 2-4-5-1 {Samus}

Weegee sweeps for the second round in a row.

4) Dr. Mario 210 Group 5 winner 6-3-3-0 {Young Link}

Vs.

11) Mario 141 Group 4 runner-up 1-7-2-2 {Yoshi}

Nothing like Mario on Mario action. As expected, this match was dead even heading into the fifth match of the series. A PhD proves to be valuable as ordinary Mario is trumped.

7) Link 196 Group 6 runner-up 5-3-3-1 {Donkey Kong}

Vs.

9) Marth 163 Group 5 runner-up 3-3-6-0 {Mr. Game & Watch}

Link eliminates Fire Emblem’s rep from the tournament in a swift 3-0 blow.

Semi-Finals (Five minute matches as opposed to three)

——————————————————————-

1) Ganondorf 278 Group 4 winner 11-1-0-0 {Ice Climbers, Captain Falcon}

Vs.

7) Link 196 Group 6 runner-up 5-3-3-1 {Donkey Kong, Marth}

The Battle of Hyrule results in Good defeating what appeared to be an unstoppable evil once again. Three games to one.

3) Luigi 229 Group 1 winner 8-3-0-1 {Bowser, Falco}

Vs.

Dr. Mario 210 Group 5 winner 6-3-3-0 {Young Link, Mario}

Luigi sweeps for the third round in a row. Impressive.

FINAL (5-minute matches in best-of-seven)

—————————————————-

3) Luigi 229 Group 1 winner 8-3-0-1 {Bowser, Falco, Dr. Mario}

Vs.

7) Link 196 Group 6 runner-up 5-3-3-1 {Donkey Kong, Marth, Ganondorf}

This series was close to the point where the seventh and final match went to sudden death. Link squeaks out the victory and wins the tournament!

I don’t know why I was motivated to post this for the first time since 2006 but it does feel good to have my tournament archives readily available  on the net. I hope you find this to be a bigger waste of time than the folks over at GameFAQs did. You have no idea how much they trolled my topic. 🙂
